Earlier in June, before the heat wave, a morning walk in the reserve at Pont de Gau* to admire the breeding habits of some of the bird life in Camargue. Moorhens with their chicks and Eurasian spoonbills in and out of the reeds, while one of the western cattle egrets was feeding its now somewhat large off-spring in the tamarisk bushes, full of other nesting herons and egrets.
But the attraction of the day was a couple of black-winged stilts, nesting in the mud flats, taking turns on their nest while other adults of the same species watched over their downy little chicks.
This is the first post in a series of two.
In the next post, the flutter of the black-headed gull and the soft summer tones of the greater flamingo.
