Endless Camargue - Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer

Promenade à cheval, digue à la mer, Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer

Camargue is the Rhone delta and like all rivers, the Rhone flows into the sea... The sea is rising faster and faster, submerging the beaches of Camargue and washing away sand dunes.

This is the first of a series of two posts on the seemingly endless landscapes and panoramas that only Camargue has to offer. They may feel timeless but in reality, they are more and more fragile and ephemeral as climate change takes its toll...

A walk along the sea dike footpath starting at Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (it heads along the coast towards Beauduc, Salin de Giraud and Port Saint Louis on the other side of the Rhone, 20 or so km away as a bird flies).

Horse rides are no longer possible on the seaward side of the footpath as the flats and dunes in these photos have been washed away and submerged

These two sunset photos were taken looking out to sea from the sea dike in December 2022. The footpath was still a long way away from the sea at the time.
